Windows Printing Guide

  • Open the Windows Start menu. This is the button in the bottom left corner of your screen that is shaped like the Windows logo.

  • Then click to Settings. This is the gear-shaped icon just above the power button in the Start menu.

Then click on Devices.

  • Next, select Printers & Scanners. You can find this in the left sidebar.

  • Then click Add a Printer.

Note: Once Windows detects your printer, all you have to do is follow the on-screen instructions for setting it up. If this is the case, you can stop at this point. However, if Windows does not auto-detect your printer, proceed to the next step.

Click “The printer that I want isn’t listed.” Once you select this, the “Add Printer” screen will pop up.

Click on “Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.”

Go to “Next” in the bottom-right corner of the window.

Under “Device type,” choose “TCP/IP Device.”

Next to “Hostname or the IP address,” type in your IP address.

Note: Don’t uncheck the “Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use” box.

Choose “Next.”

Rename it to something memorable (this is what your computer calls the printer in the drop down of the print menu)

Click "Next"

Click "Do Not Share" then hit "Next"

If you get this screen you are almost in the clear.

At the bottom of this page hit "Print test page" and if it produces a page you can hit "Finish"

If you get this page then a few more steps

If you get a dialogue stating ADDITIONAL PORT INFORMATION REQUIRED, the printer is probably not connected to the network. It will ask you for a DEVICE TYPE, Standard or Custom. Leave the choice as STANDARD, GENERIC NETWORK CARD, and select NEXT.

If your computer was not able to locate a driver for the printer, or if you got the error above asking for additional port information, the next dialogue will ask you to INSTALL THE PRINT DRIVER. From the left side of the table, select the MANUFACTURER of the printer. From the right side of the table select the PRINTER MODEL. If the printer you are trying to install is available in the INSTALL THE PRINT DRIVER dialogue, select it and say NEXT, then FINISH.

If you are unable to locate a printer you can use the Microsoft Generic Plus PCL6 Printer Driver V.(highest number in the list)
